ABOUT: Their goal, in all its glory of idealism and passion, is to help raise the bar of the LA theatre scene by creating an exceptional body of work that inspires, energizes, and intoxicates their audiences.
Theatre YAWP is committed to fostering a sense of artistic community in Los Angeles. Their productions bring together actors, writers, musicians, and dancers; visual art hangs in our gallery space; our pre-show salons include play-related discussions led by local university professors; and our post-show events feature live music spanning a wide range of genres. Most importantly, they recognize that audience members are an integral part of our creative process: and encourage everyone to stick around and share their impressions of the play, their thoughts on theatre in Los Angeles, their ideas for next season....
They also want to take Theatre YAWP into the greater
Los Angeles community through their educational programs, currently in
development:
ENGLISH THROUGH DRAMA: A fresh approach to language
learning, combining drama games and actor training techniques. Demetria
Fehst, the Artistic Director, formulated this program while teaching English
in South Korea and Cambodia. She continues to work as an ESL teacher in
L.A.
YAWP OUT LOUD: This children’s program, in partnership
with our local libraries, is story-time as you’ve never seen it before...
Each afternoon features their professional company of actors as readers
(they do all the voices and don’t care if they look silly!). They also
invite young listeners to play drama games, and they provide an educational
supplement for their parents to take home.
SCHOOL@STAGES presents one of their productions to the senior class of Hollywood High (right around the corner from our space at Stages). Students are encouraged to participate in games, discussion, and a guided backstage tour with the Yawp company after the show.
