spoken funk

ABOUT: Spoken Funk is an upbeat, uplifting, breath of comedic and poetic fresh air. The brainchild of Juren Smith and Tony Award winning poet, Poetri, Spoken Funk fuses today’s funniest comedians with the world’s most talented spoken word poets. The groundbreaking combination of comedy and poetry have never acquiesced with such success, and the fusion of genres provides each and every guests with gut busting laughter and insightful thought provoking commentary on today’s most intricate topics.

This dynamic duo has already teamed up in several avenues, from designing and sales, to a club full of games, to workshops on television. Poetri is the muse, the brilliant wordsmith, entertainer, and crowd pleaser; Juren is the big-idea woman, the one who takes the risks, shapes the brand, and pushes the boundaries. After years of disappointment from the social circuit’s predictability and hunger for shock value over moral value, they set out to formulate an environment where one wouldn’t feel desensitized by the end of the night. They've found a way to combine their individual strengths and compensate for each other's weaknesses, to forge mature entertainment that is both commercially successful and a reflection of their own values. They bring to you…SPOKEN FUNK.

To regard Tony Award winner POETRI as just a poet would be underestimating his abilities. As a writer/producer, he has worked on “Russell Simmons Presents Def Poetry Jam” on HBO and Broadway, for which he was a featured player as a prominent Def Poet. POETRI has also written and appeared on over 150 commercials for clients like Nike, NFL Films and BET and Arby’s. Today you can hear Poetri recite several of his poems on all KCAL 9 commercials for Laker Basketball. Poetri has worked with such legends as Curtis Mayfield, Bootsy Collins and Nona Hendrix, as well as some of today’s stars like LL Cool J, ?uestlove, John Sally and Malcolm-Jamal Warner. He is also the voice on Non-Stop-Pop on Delta Airlines. He is one of the first poets in this new generation to smash the theory that “poets don’t make any money”.

In addition to being Spoken Funk’s DJ, B.R.U.T.H.A Gimel has been a member of four slam teams, traveling the world showcasing his talent as a spoken word poet. Poetry aside, B.R.U.T.H.A Gimel is the engineer of the turntable for many of Southern California’s poetry venues. While up starting many of today’s venues B.R.U.T.H.A Gimel has worked with the likes of D.L Hughley, Flex Anderson, and even Mad TV.
