Museum of Fine Arts Houston is proud to present Hooray for Bollywood! Making a selection from the irrepressible and prolific film genre Bollywood is quite a challenge. This brief series honors the late B. R. Chopra, a leading figure in Indian cinema, with a restored version of his 1957 classic Naya Daur. Also featured are three recent releases with appealing storylines presented through a full complement of Bollywood accoutrements: gorgeous stars, extravagant musical numbers, passionate romance, melodrama, and fast-paced action.
Rang De Basanti - A group of college guys, including DJ (Amir Kahn), is recruited by a British director (Alice Patten) to act in a film about India's struggle for independence. Billu (Billu Barber) - Based on the bond of friendship that Lord Krishna shared with his childhood friend Sudama. Om Shanti Om - Working in 1970s Bollywood, Om dreams of becoming India's biggest star. Naya Daur -Naya Daur tells the story of Shankar (Dilip Kumar), a tangewala (horse-cart driver), and Krishna, a woodcutter, best friends in a small town dependent on the local mill.
