The Texas Repertory Theatre Company, NW Houston's critically-acclaimed professional theatre, brings the smash hit bluegrass gospel musical Smoke on the Mountain to summer audiences. On a hot June night in 1938, Mount Pleasant Baptist Church erupts with comedy and commotion as the Sanders family rocks the traditional congregation with their first ever "Saturday Night Sing".
Blending soulful storytelling with toe-tapping gospel music, Smoke on the Mountain delivers musical fun and laughter for the whole family. With bluegrass renditions of traditional hymns and spirituals, intertwined with the endearing life stories of all five Sanders, the joyful evening uplifts and entertains even the most stalwart and stuffy of church members. The Texas Repertory Theatre Co. production features Houston theatre veterans Jeff Lane, Shondra Marie, Kyle Greer, and Ted Doolittle as well as newcomers Beth Hopp and Rachel Logue. The cast is led by award-winning director Rachel Mattox, in her Texas Rep debut.
