The Ensemble Theatre was founded in 1976 by the late George Hawkins to preserve African American artistic expression and enlighten, entertain and enrich a diverse community.
Thirty-one years later, the theatre has evolved from a touring company operating from the trunk of Mr. Hawkins' car to being one of Houston's finest historical cultural institutions. The Ensemble Theatre has fulfilled and surpassed the vision of its founder, and continues to expand and create innovative programs to bring African American theatre to a myriad of audiences.
Their current offering, , tells the story of Marta Henderson who has the awesome task of fulfilling her grandmother's dying wish to have her ashes scattered over Africa. This ignites an internal explosion of family struggle. Filled with love and humor that lends to the powerful African American family dynamic.
Also don't miss the upcoming peformance, , a vibrant musical revue and tribute to the black musicians of the early 1900s highlighting the music of Thomas "Fats" Waller. This show is sure to bring the house down with its wall to wall music, non-stop entertainment and American spirit.
